Finally, BarCamp ASEAN 2018 has been named as the World Largest BarCamp. The journey that began in 2008 with 300 participants now transformed into an event attended by 8,000 aspiring tech users, enthusiastic, gurus, geeks, nerds, pro and students alike. Held on 20th and 21st October 2018 at Institute of Technology of Cambodia, one of the nation’s symbol for tech breakthrough, BarCamp ASEAN 2018 brings to the country and its participants an interactive space where everyone engage in simple sharing and learning about technology, business, startups, creative ideas, innovations, human resources and career development. As always, this year event is supported by both the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and big name companies such as SMART, EZECOM, TOTAL, PassApps, Koompi, BookMeBus and many more community partners.
BarCamp, a user-generated “unconference” event which focuses on sharing knowledge for free, has begun in United States in 2005, and over the years, it was held in 460 cities across the world. Phnom Penh joined the scene in 2008 and has spread to other provinces such as Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampot, Takeo, Prey Veng, Banteay Meanchy, Rattanakiri, Sihanouk ville, Stoeng Treng etc.
Under the theme of “Powering your future in digital era”, BarCamp ASEAN 2018, thrives to further promote the use of digital technology to improve business and life style. Despite BarCamp is known to focus on technology, speakers at BarCamp Cambodia are invited to share about many ranges of topic, including personal branding and development. The most attended single session is “Why should you travel alone?” by Van Zakolin, founder of Frost ZK Cambodia Motovlog, who shared some tips on how to make a successful vlog and his personal experience doing solo trip with his motorbike.
The launch of Koompi laptop, nation’s first of the kind, is the top of the talk for BarCamp ASEAN 2018. Long lines of young Cambodian queueing to enter ITC’s main hall room to witness the historic day has surprised even Koompi founder, Mr. Thul Rithy, who said he only expected about 400 people. The occasion opens with Khmer traditional dance, and further alighted by the performance from Small World Small Band, Cambodia much loved original artists. Taking that opportunity, Mr. Rithy and his team recounts their journey and deliver their special thanks to the supportive people and community that make it possible for him team to launch this laptop. BarCamp ASEAN 2018 is delighted to be part of this big moment.
A team of 60 organizers and volunteers is the main driving force behind this year’s success. One of them is veteran Be Chantra, who has been with BarCamp Cambodia since day one. He recalled how the first 3 years was a big struggle for him, but with supportive encouragements and friends who team up to help him run the event, he continues hosting BarCamp Cambodia which now become the major driver in mobilizing Cambodian youths and tech communities all over the country. Looking forward, he said that this year BarCamp has proved that Cambodia tech community and users has so much potential to offer and this result will inspire the team to work harder to contribute to the advancement of tech scenes in this country.
